Be An Outsider

Be An Outsider

This is ‘”Retreat” Follow Up 3.0’, but I am not calling it that. I figured I needed to mix up the titles of my posts and make sure people were paying attention…and not getting bored 🙂 You aren’t getting bored…right? Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of my posts so far.

As I mentioned in this post, I had two strange, but connected things happen to me on the Monday after the “retreat”. The second one will be discussed here.

I can’t stress enough about the irony in what I already wrote and what I plan to write here. Remember, this is after listening to Hilary Scott’s songs on my way into work and the insane connection of her songs and my life.

I was planning to watch a news video about the positive identification of a missing girl in Missouri. But before the news broadcast started, an L.L. Bean commercial came on. It starts with a cute, flannel wearing, guy, walking out of a log cabin, taking in a deep breath of fresh woodsy air. (I can only imagine it was woodsy; use your imagination folks! 🙂 )

It continues with a woman saying “Welcome to the Outside”. The woman narrates the commercial while there are kids playing, people walking or playing games with friends, and ends with a boy howling at the sky and people jumping into the lake. Weirdly enough, we ended our Allurement Walk by howling, so everyone could hear us. And if you read my other post, I mentioned “jumping” and how I had the urge to jump in the lake on my walk.

So, while there are some obvious connections, this commercial means a little more than the face value of it. Sure, I connect it to being in the woods the weekend before, but look a little bit deeper. There are times I feel like an outsider. But the woman says “We are all Outsiders”. Which ultimately means, we are all connected. We don’t have to know each other or know backgrounds and histories. We don’t need to meet each other on the street or share a dessert. We are all simply connected in one way or another. Connected because of Mother Nature. Connected because we are all naturally drawn to being outdoors. And there are so many more connections possible.

We all share the same bond – the universe and life.

Coming full circle, even though we may feel alone, lonely or unloved at times, we don’t need to feel that way because we are all connected. We are all outsiders. So, take your head out of your phone and computer, reconnect with nature, which could ultimately help you reconnect with someone you have personally disconnected from.

I invite you to try…“Because on the inside, we are all outsiders.”
